Intuitive Landscapes
These paintings begin with landscape, but not necessarily with a place.
Working intuitively, I allow color, gesture, memory, and the emerging image to guide the painting as it unfolds. Like improvising or composing music, one decision suggests another. I rarely know where the painting is going or what it might reveal until it is finished.
What emerges often feels suspended somewhere between an external landscape and an internal one—a place that doesn't quite exist, yet somehow feels remembered.
About the Painting
The River Carried Us emerged through an intuitive, improvisational process, allowing color, gesture, and the suggestion of landscape to lead the way.
Rather than depicting a particular place, the painting occupies the shifting territory between an outer landscape and an inner one. Water, light, and land seem to appear and dissolve, while unexpected passages of turquoise, magenta, ochre, and violet move through the surface like fragments of memory.
Created as the cover artwork for my six-movement composition for solo classical guitar, The River Carried Us, the painting was never intended as a literal illustration of the music. Instead, I allowed the same ideas of movement, memory, transformation, and the unknown to find their own expression through paint.
